CUSTOM BRACING

Custom Bracing

At Sunup Physiotherapy we provide a wide array of bracing options for many orthopedic conditions. Essentially, any joint in the body can be braced depending on the condition you are being treated for. Due to the complexity of the body and the mechanics of each joint, we offer the highest quality of braces available on the market today. We are a preferred supplier of DonJoy products: braces that are custom fitted to your needs and are anatomically knitted with breathable fabric and visco-elastic inserts.

Why do physiotherapists prescribe bracing?

Custom bracing can be used for a variety of conditions that may cause pain or limit your function. Be it a ligament injury, post-surgery, or osteoarthritis, bracing is designed to restore movement, decrease pain and optimize performance. As movement specialists, we know how debilitating an injury can be. Bracing can be a great compliment to your rehabilitation process by providing stability, stimulating circulation while promoting healing to the area of injury.

Areas that can be braced

  • Custom Knee Braces: align and support the knee, provide stability, relieve pressure and offload the knee, reduce osteoarthritis pain.
  • Custom Wrist Braces: align and support the wrist from a fracture or repetitive strain injury.
  • Back Braces: realign, immobilize or support weakened areas of the lumbar spine or sacroiliac joint.
  • Custom Shoulder Braces: assist with instability from subluxations and/or dislocation, post-operative pain.
  • Custom Ankle Braces: assist with instability, reduce pain from tendonitis, post-operative rehabilitation.

Osteoarthritic (OA) custom medial offloader knee brace

These braces are utilized in situations where it’s desirable to ‘unload’ one particular aspect of the knee. When we walk, approximately 80% of our mechanical load is placed on the inside (medial) aspect of the knee. This very often leads to disproportionate wear of that aspect of the joint. This process is exacerbated in patients who have had prior surgical procedures to their knee (i.e. meniscectomy, debridement, trimming or ‘clean ups’ of the soft tissues within the joint). Custom unloading knee braces do an outstanding job of mitigating the impact to this affected part of the joint without placing appreciably increased load on to the opposite side of the knee. These braces are custom fit down to the millimeter and are comfortable and elegant; they often fit under normal pants or overtop of tights.

Custom ligament knee bracing (ACL/MCL/LCL/PCL)

These custom knee braces are made of a carbon composite material that is very light and exceptionally strong. Custom fit down to the millimeter, they provide exceptional stability to a knee that has sustained injury to either medial or lateral collateral ligaments, or to the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament). A properly fitted custom ACL knee brace is commonly used as a pre-and post-surgical aid to limit damage to other structures (namely the meniscus) prior to a surgical procedure as well as to protect a fresh surgically reconstructed ACL graft. Custom braces for posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) instability can also be prescribed and provided.

Custom cartilage (rebound) knee bracing

Similar in design to an OA medial offloader knee brace, a ‘rebound’ cartilage offloader is designed to offload one particular part of the knee that has sustained damage to its cartilaginous or meniscal surface. As with all of our other custom knee braces, these rebound cartilage braces can be for both daily use or for more active or sporting activities.

To make a custom brace, it is a requirement for the practitioner to assess your condition. This will ensure that the right fitting brace be provided for the most optimal option for your recovery. To obtain pricing information, please contact us today.
